Promoting Relationship Building by Quashing Stereotypes
A presentation by Laura
Viscardis
ALL ABOUT ME -- THE WORKSHOP
Laura Viscardis
conducts a short workshop presentation called, “All About
Me.” Laura would be pleased to make this presentation for
people interested in promoting the inclusion of people who
live with disabilities.
The purpose of
this presentation is:
1. To
help break down stereotypes related to individuals who have
intellectual disabilities; to help people see that
individuals who live with intellectual disabilities have
hopes and dreams and goals and aspirations the same as most
people.
2. To
help people see past DIS-ability, to see A-bility.
3. To
help people understand the importance of appropriate
individualized support and reciprocal relationships for
people who live with intellectual disabilities; to see that
anything is possible when strong relationships and
appropriate supports are in place.
4. To
help open people’s minds to the possibilities of inclusion
and citizenship.

“I’ve learned a lot from
Laura. I cannot get over how many things she has already
experienced in her life.
She is a
great teacher.”

ABOUT LAURA VISCARDIS
Laura Viscardis was diagnosed at a very young age with an
intellectual disability. Laura lives with chronic,
heightened anxiety related to Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This, plus the need for individualized supports and
meaningful relationships, is the challenge that has made the
most significant impact on her life.
At the age of 10, Laura began to articulate her dream of
being a teacher. Ever since, she has consistently expressed
her interest in teaching. Laura left high school in 2002 at
the age of 17, and with the support of her team, she began
to fulfill her dream. She enjoys telling people about her
interests and capabilities, and, in doing so, opening
people’s minds to the possibilities of inclusion and
citizenship. She is now a “teacher.”
Laura has made presentations to students and educators, both
elementary and secondary, to service providers and to
corporations. Laura lives in Peterborough, in her own
apartment, adjacent to her parents’ home.
